Getting to know your topic: Research and Analysis

Step 5 of the toolkit will support you in carrying out your stakeholder and situational analysis.

Guidelines Step 5

Toolkit Step 5

The starting point to your research is to have a deeper understanding of the subject. This step can happen formally as a step in your work or, depending on time and resources, it can be done in conjunction with Steps 7 and 8. However, this information is important to include as the first part of your final report as a way to explain the context for the good practices that will be collected.

What we recommend is to see organizing your information as the 1st step to starting your final report.  To have a contextual understanding of the topic and application of the theory.

  • What does the CRPD say?
  • What does domestic law say?
  • What do you see as good practices on this subject? Why are they "good"?
  • What is the social and political context within which your subject matter and project lies?

The answer to these questions will form the first part of your report. The level of analysis can be general -- or it can be deep and analytic. In most cases it will simply reflect some thinking about the topic, context and CRPD.

Overall, this is a preparatory step to prepare you for the collection of your practices and finalization of your report.

Core Resources:

  • How to write a literature review - One strong way to understand your topic is by creating a literature review. Read information online, in journals, newspapers and other sources. Start to gather information that will be of importance when collecting practices.

  • Meet with key stakeholders -When beginning a project like this, it is always important to meet  with your key stakeholders. They may be those you will interview for your good practice collection or work with in dissemination and advocacy.

  • Generally survey your context and community -  Surveying the laws in your country or locality, key members of your community and the resources that exist will assist you with the rest of your MIW project. It will allow you to determine who you will need to interview for your Step 7 collection of good practices.
