Rights, Equality, Citizenship, Solidarity and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in West Africa (DECISIPH)

A MIW project on Local Inclusive Governance has begun  in West Africa as part of the DECISIPH project.  DECISIPH is a five-year project beginning in 2008, covering six countries in West Africa (Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo). The overall objective of DECISIPH is to contribute to the promotion of equal rights among persons with disabilities and other citizens and the full inclusion of people with disabilities in West African society. The specific objective is that the disabled peoples organizations in the West African region, thanks to sustained individual and collective activities, could increase their representation and expand their involvement in and influence on national public policies and local strategies of development.

This project is implemented in partnership with:

  • The Secretary of the African Decade of People with Disabilities;
  • The National Federations of Organizations of People With Disabilities ;
  • The Ministries directly and indirectly in charge of disabilities issues;
  • The national and local DPOs.

This project will increase the availability and accessibility of relevant and reliable information on people with disabilities, their rights and organizations to provide food for advocacy for disabled people's organizations.

The MIW Project aims to:

  • Collect field experiences, good practices related to the theme of local inclusive governance;
  • Make recommendations to local authorities, NGOs and DPOs to improve the social participation of people with disabilities and the implementation of inclusive actions;
  • Support constructive advocacy activities lead by DPOs.

The MIW Project is managed in collaboration with multi-stakeholder steering and advisory committees created at regional and national level (in each of the 6 countries of the DECISIPH Project). A report including the case studies of the good practices collected across West Africa and the recommendations for the stakeholders will be produced and disseminated.

A regional conference to present the report will be held in Dakar in September 2010.
