History of the MIW Initiative

At the end of the elaboration process of the UN Convention, stakeholders started some discussion on how to produce and exchange information to support the implementation of the Convention. UNDESA called a meeting for UN agencies, disability organizations and NGOs to discuss this issue. HI, during this meeting, presented an experience it had with collecting good practices on disability and development with the goal of influencing policy.

Learning from the experience, HI decided to start MIW as an international inititive to produce and share knowledge on making disability rights a reality. For that, an advisory committee was established with international NGOs, DPOs and academic institutions. Financial resources were secured and staff were hired.  A guideline and this website was developed to propose a common methodology with the ultimate objective to support the development of projects around the world.
