Context of MIW

CRPD and MIW

The CRPD makes demands on governments to deliver appropriate policies, legislation and services that will remove barriers to full participation in society. For many, particularly in developing countries, this represents a difficult task. in order to civil society groups and policy-makers to effectively engage with the RPD, there is an urgent need to facilitate their access to well-researched and relevant information that can be readily applied to different contexts.

In many countries, information and research on disability issues -- and specifically on the situation of peopel with disabilities -- is largely absent. As a result, it is extremely difficult for civil society groups and policy-makers to effectively address how disability policy should be shaped and how such policies might impact on practices and services at a local level. The MIW Initiative will support governments, UN agencies, development organizations and civil society actors to better coordinate their efforts and communication on disability poilcy and practice and to monitor how and where the Convention is being implemented.

Needs arising from the CRPD:

  • Policy makers do not have access to information on how to create inclusive policies.
  • Organizations need the capacity to identify solutions and not only the problems.
  • In many countries there is a lack of  information and research on disability issues. To be able to advocate effectively, this information is needed.
  • Difficult for civil society groups and policy makers to effectively address how disability policy should be shaped and how such policies might impact practices at a the local level

Responding to the need, MIW:

  • Allows DPOs to be involved in politics—and the policy- making process.
  • Documents what works and make change.  Let’s make it happen. Policy makers need information/propositions.
  • Provides a format for publications to be easily shared.
  • Standardizes the means of documenting and exchanging practices.
  • Supports service providers to improve their practice in line with the CRPD.
